JKR wins outstanding contribution to children's literature award!

http://www.list.co.uk/article/5798-writers-guild-awards-talent-show/

Emma and JKR on Xmas must-watch tv...

emma at no 9 and JKR at no 5.

emma's is her ballet shoes film.

JKR's is a documentary abt her works.

BBC article on Ballet Shoes..latest.

Set in Thirties London, Ballet Shoes, a one-off film for BBC One, tells the exhilarating tale of orphans Pauline (Emma Watson), Petrova (Yasmin Paige) and Posy Fossil (Lucy Boynton) who are adopted by an eccentric explorer, Great Uncle Matthew (Richard Griffiths), and raised as sisters by his selfless niece, Sylvia (Emilia Fox), under the guidance of Nana (Victoria Wood). The film also stars Dame Eileen Atkins as ballet teacher Madame Fidolia.

The timeless and uplifting story revolves around each girl's struggle to fulfil her dreams: Pauline longs to be an actress, Petrova yearns to be an aviator and Posy seems born to be a ballerina.

fllwg is abt Emma only..

Casting Pauline proved toughest of all. Heidi reveals: "We saw every blonde actress in London, and not one of them was right." In desperation, Wenger and Goldbacher arranged an open casting session. More than a hundred girls turned up - and none of them fitted the bill. "It was like a nightmare," says Heidi. "There were women in their twenties turning up in ankle socks."

When Emma Watson expressed an interest in the role, Wenger, Heidi and Goldbacher were delighted. Emma arranged to meet Sandra Goldbacher over a cup of tea, and there was an instant chemistry between them.

"Emma was perfect for Pauline," reports Goldbacher. "She has a piercing, delicate aura that makes you want to gaze and gaze at her." Emma was intrigued by the part; Pauline's experience as a child actress who becomes a movie star had some parallels with her own.

Emma comments: "I was all set to go back to school after finishing Harry Potter but couldn't resist Ballet Shoes. I really loved it; it felt so funny and real. It was also beautifully written." She adds that a scene that had most resonance for her takes place the night before the première of Pauline's first film. Pauline weeps: "Tomorrow night, my face is going to be blown up as big as a house, and everyone will find me out!"

According to Heidi, Emma need not fear. "Emma's performance in Ballet Shoes is a revelation," she comments. "She is maturing rapidly as a young woman and as an actress – her work is sensitive, subtle and intelligent."

Heidi adds: "She is also incredibly hardworking. Our schedule was murderous, and she never once complained, even when she was white with exhaustion." Insiders also noticed a refreshing lack of vanity - Emma agreed to play one scene with her hair in bright blue curlers. "She looked a complete sight but she just got on with it," laughs Heidi.

Nevertheless, Pauline grows into a beautiful teenager in the course of the story, and, when Emma came on set to film her final scenes, she was wearing her first-ever coating of rich, red lipstick. "There were gasps," says Heidi. "We suddenly got a sense of the great beauty Emma is likely to become - and it was breathtaking."

what do u think of Emma in red lipstick?!

Harry Potter star wants Corrie role

When a celebrity reaches a certain level of fame, everything comes easily. Or so we'd like to think.

But even a star the size of Daniel Radcliffe, the young actor who shot to fame as Harry Potter in the blockbusting movies, has unfulfilled ambitions.

According to The Sun, landing a part in one of the nation's favourite soaps is one of them.

The 18-year-old, who recently starred in ITV1 drama My Boy Jack, said: "I love Corrie. Being in that would be fun."

A Street spokesman said: "We would love to have him."

We bet they would!

mouth water?

Take this test!

Getting away from it all is where it's at for a stylish and pampered soul like you. Nothing beats a departure from the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day like a jaunt to a serene and scenic spot.

Life's hectic, so what really makes your mouth water is some good old peace and quiet. Whether it's at a seaside cottage, lake house, or cabin in the mountains, you enjoy retreating to places that have lots to offer in natural beauty and untainted splendor. And if it's got a spa, all the better! So get out there and relax!

BRavo..well said..EW.

J.K. Rowling is our Entertainer of the Year because she did something very, very hard, and she did it very, very well, thus pleasing hundreds of millions of children and adults very, very much. In an era of videogame consoles, online multiplayer "environments," and tinier-is-better mobisodes, minisodes, and webisodes, she got people to tote around her big, fat old-fashioned printed-on-paper books as if they were the hottest new entertainment devices on the planet.

more on the fanfic James Potter and the Elder Crossing.

Some papers, including The Scotsman, have reported that J.K. Rowling’s representatives are threatening legal action against Mr. Lippert. This is entirely false, and some papers have retracted that information publicly.

Mr. Lippert contacted TLC to tell us the following (which has been backed up by the Christopher Little Agency, the entity that would pursue a legal action if there was one to be had):

“Information regarding any ‘legal action’ on the part of Ms. Rowling is quite false. I sought contact with Ms. Rowling via her agent, offering her an advance copy of the story for her perusal. This was accepted (at least by her agent), and presumably they are currently perusing JPHEC at this moment to assure they have no problems with the content. Additionally, they have assured me that as long as I have no intentions of publishing the book for profit, that it is appropriate for children [no pornography], and that I do not intend to attribute it to Ms. Rowling, they have no problem whatsoever with my free release of the book.“

Again, the Christopher Little Agency also told TLC of the phone call, its contents, the requested provisions regarding the work, and the request to share the fanfiction with J.K. Rowling (though whether it has indeed gone to J.K. Rowling herself is unconfirmed).

Mr. Lippert has said that he’s quite surprised by all the attention to his work and didn’t intend for the story to become so egregious.

Rowling is the only author on our list. The seventh (and last) installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hit bookstores in July and worldwide sales of the first six topped 325 million copies. The film series, from which Rowling enjoys a cut of royalties and merchandising has grossed $3.5 billion, and there’s no doubt three more movies to come.

more on the Sotheby auction in Dec.

http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSL2020699220071120

Sotheby's auctioneers displayed a rare copy of J.K. Rowling's book "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" on Tuesday, ahead of a charity auction on December 13 when the work is expected top fetch up to $100,000.

The volume, bound in brown leather and decorated with a silver skull and moonstones, is a hand-written collection of fairytales mentioned in the Harry Potter author's last wizard saga.

Of the five wizarding fairytales, only one -- "The Tale of the Three Brothers" -- is told in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".....

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601088&sid=aXzc1Bp1PZiw&refer=home

Sotheby's is betting Harry Potter's fame will lift a handwritten fairy tale by J.K. Rowling to a record 50,000 pounds ($103,000) at a Dec. 13 London charity auction.

''The Tales of Beedle the Bard'' went on show today at the auction house, with a valuation similar to a 1902 edition of Beatrix Potter's ``The Tale of Peter Rabbit.'' The success of the Harry Potter books, which have sold more than 350 million copies, will spill over onto Rowling's latest work, Sotheby's said.....

Equus recording report..ahem..nice comment fr Jenna of dr.com

"The opening scene in each act, and a couple of other scenes – the worship and the cinema – were far too dark to work out what was happening, if you hadn’t seen it blankety-twelve times, but the camera work on everything else was superb.

The side-view cameras zoomed, panned and focused on the faces when two characters were talking across the stage to each other. The front view covered the whole scene when "stuff" was happening right across the stage."

So. What do you have to do?

You e-mail the Archive for an appointment, and they e-mail back a map and a confirmation, then you go and ring the buzzer and they open the gate and let you in.

Once you go in, you go up to reception and show some ID and sign in and get a pass that beeps you through a turnstile and two locked doors, until you reach the Reading Room.

There the lovely chap wishes you a happy birthday… no, wait, that’s just me… gives you a form to fill in, to get your reader’s ticket (valid for a year) and he takes you next door to the viewing room.

The viewing room contains four TVs, a fiche reader and a photocopier… each TV has a DVD, VCR player and two pairs of snazzy headphones, so you can bring a friend, but there are no dark curtains, or anything, so there is reflection on the screen.

And then you are left to it.

Just you and your tape and your remote control and your rewind button - not that anyone would actually use the rewind button...

The production was filmed using three cameras, one directly in front of the stage, and one probably in a box on either side. Apart from a couple of scenes that were best viewed from the stage seats, they really did surprisingly well with a production that was not set up to be filmed.

The opening scene in each act, and a couple of other scenes – the worship and the cinema – were far too dark to work out what was happening, if you hadn’t seen it blankety-twelve times, but the camera work on everything else was superb.

The side-view cameras zoomed and panned and focused on the faces when two characters were talking across the stage to each other. The front view covered the whole scene when "stuff" was happening right across the stage.

The director – who was called Ron – put a lot of effort into choosing which of his three angles to use – when Alan crouched to groom Nugget, they managed a shot behind Dysart’s back of Alan’s face nuzzling the horse’s leg; some of the scenes when Alan was standing over Dysart looked like they’d been staged especially to have his face over Dysart’s shoulder.

The two climactic scenes were covered beautifully.

The side cameras zooming in on Alan’s face as he rides Nugget at the end of Act One, but the front camera showing the galloping.

Yes, there is nudity visible at the end of Act Two, but it is usually from the hips up, or deep in the shadows, until he finally stands with his back to us and faces Nugget. The blinding scene is surprisingly fluid, seeing as he runs very fast and the three cameras have six horses and a long shot to cover, in just one take.

I was very impressed with the camera work. Very.

The film could not be sold, even if they wanted to, because there are some dramatically lit scenes that are just impenetrable, and the sound is not of DVD quality, obviously.

But for someone who has already seen the play, it was perfection! It should definitely be on the tourist highlights of London!

Sotheby add note catalogue for JKR

"The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a collection of Wizarding fairy-tales of special significance within Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In chapter seven of the final Harry Potter book we learn that in his will, Albus Dumbledore leaves his copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard to Hermione Granger "in the hope that she will find it entertaining and instructive". The stories comprise 'The Wizard and the Hopping Pot', 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune', 'The Warlock's Hairy Heart', 'Babbity Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump' and 'The Tale of the Three Brothers'. The final tale is published within Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; the others have been hitherto entirely unknown.

donate for the cause...alert for HP fans...

Earlier today, Andrew Slack of the Harry Potter Alliance issued a call to action for all Harry Potter fans concerning a terrible state of affairs involving the mothers of Darfur. Our community has long been recognized for its concern for and response to urgent global situations.

As the crisis in Darfur continues to worsen the Harry Potter Alliance, MuggleNet, Leaky, and the Wizard Rock Community are asking for your assistance.

Please take a few minutes to read the following statement by Andrew. It is our hope you will join all of us in taking the steps to help resolve this very serious issue.

"More than any thing else, Harry Potter is a treatise on the power of love, in particular, the love of a mother for her child. Darfur is in the Western region of Sudan where the government is currently engaging in a form of genocide by hiring their Janjaweed militia to systematically kill the people of Darfur and there are now as many as 2.5 million refugees."

and she tops yet another poll!

JK was chosen as the number one celebrity America would most like to have as a substitute educator for a day.

Ms. Rowling garnered 25 percent of the vote in a poll by the National Education Association (NEA) and president Reg Weaver said:

Teachers make magic every day in the classroom when they educate youngsters. J.K. Rowling has brought her own magic touch to millions of children by sparking their interest and cultivating a love of reading. Now that the Harry Potter series has come to a close, perhaps Ms. Rowling would like to join the teaching corps -- even if just for a day -- and keep the adventure alive.

Runners-up include Microsoft founder Bill Gates (23 percent), golf superstar Tiger Woods (21 percent), Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera (18 percent) and movie director/producer Steven Spielberg (13 percent).

ITV interview w. Dan&Emma.

ITN has a new report from the cast at the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD press launch in London. Here's what was said about the next film. Half-Blood Prince.

The tone of The Half Blood Prince is set to be like a romantic comedy, whilst staying faithful to the darker elements.

Emma Watson, who plays Hermione, said: "In this next one there's a lot of emphasis on the relationship between Hermione and Ron and I think this next one will be more comic.

"I think the last one was a lot darker and heavier and this one will be funnier and more light-hearted."

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, added: "In the sixth, I think you get a greater insight into Harry's sense of humour.

"I think the sixth generally is a lot funnier than any of the films before. Harry's got quite a dry sense of humour, I have quite a dry sense of humour, so it's quite nice that my character has the same (thing).

"There's an incredible darkness to the film as there always is but there is a real lightness to it which balances it out quite nicely."

ootp movie tops UK box office this year...congrats to all!

The UK Film Council has released a new report today that shows Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix led the way this year at the UK Box Office. The Guardian reports that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, “a joint UK-US production from Warner Brothers,” has “grossed £49.2m up to September 23.”

It has been one of the most enduring cinematic cliches that the troubled British film industry is regarded as an embarrassment, churning out unloved productions made on a shoestring that struggle to compete with Hollywood blockbusters.

But this year the industry’s fortunes have seen a big improvement as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hot Fuzz, Miss Potter and Atonement have all helped to expand the market share for British productions at the UK box office. British films account for 27% of box office takings so far this year, against 19% for the whole of 2006, according to figures published today by the UK film industry.

news that will make Hermione proud...Daily Mail...

In news that surely would make Hermione proud, the Daily Mail is reporting today about a school in the UK that has experienced a significant turnaround in the academic performance of their students after introducing a Harry Potter curriculum this year. While the use of Harry Potter in schools is nothing new, the paper reports that a primary school in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, England "has jumped from the bottom 25 per cent of schools nationally to just outside the top 5 per cent over the last three years after deciding to let pupils pick a theme for the curriculum each term."

A recent inspection of the maths lessons where "the children were motivated to learn about subtraction by pretending that it is a magic formula created by Harry Potter. Pupils were not allowed to answer questions without first saying a spell - "numerus subtracticus", which they devised themselves. The official report describes achievement at the school as "outstanding.

Dan interview....for HP 6 and MBJ

- Hi Dan! How are you? Youre working a lot, arent you?
Fine, thanks! Yes, Im actually upside down right now. I just finished promoting December Boys and immediately afterwards I started shooting the Half Blood Prince.

- Thats true, because Harry wont give in! Do you think he will in the sixth movie?
(laughs) You will have to see that in theatres. But theres something about that in the next film.

- And when will you surprise us on that front?
Huh? What? (laughs). The truth is that I have not time for that. I only make friends with the people that I work with, actually. Like Emma.

new interview w. Trio.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_7080000/newsid_7089600/7089684.stm

CBBC Newsround has posted a new interview conducted with the Trio of Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson where they discuss filming on the upcoming "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." In this new interview (video at the above link as well), actor Rupert Grint talks about his scenes as Ron Weasley and the actress who will play his new love interest (Lavender Brown) in the sixth Harry Potter film. Rupert says:

"I was involved with the Lavender Brown audition and the whole Lavender thing. Her name's Jessie and she is really cool and it's going to be really funny."
Emma: "She seems really sweet and perfect for the role of Lavender. The casting is so good and I am looking forward to her scenes with Ron. I think it's going to be quite a comic film."

We do not yet know the full name of the actress who will play Lavender Brown, and we will update with more when we can. Actor Dan Radcliffe continues on in the interview and mentions the filming for the movie, where he worked with the new actor who is playing the new Professor in the film.

"It's going very well. So far we've been doing a lot of work with Slughorn, who is being played brilliantly by Jim Broadbent."

UPDATE: On a related note, BBC is also running another article, focusing yet again on the actors and their reactions to the revelation that the character of Dumbledore is gay. "Radcliffe told BBC News: "JK Rowling is an incredibly intelligent woman. She can't have thought for a moment that that would go down well in the Bible Belt of America, but she put it brilliantly herself: 'He's my character - I can do what I want with him.' Which I think is fair enough."

David Yates, who directed the fifth Harry Potter film - Order of the Phoenix - said he was told in September by JK Rowling during a read-through for the next film on the set of the Great Hall at Hogwarts.Jo leaned over to me and said: 'You know Dumbledore's gay don't you, David?' And I thought 'Wow that's pretty cool'." Yates, who was speaking at the press launch of the Phoenix DVD, added: "He's a wonderful character, Dumbledore - graceful, wise, powerful, quirky, terrific sense of humour, loves knitting. There's a jumble of things in there and his sexuality is just another thing." .... "Michael Gambon hasn't changed his approach. A person's sexuality is just one part of who they are, and so it hasn't really shifted where we're taking him." Producer David Barron confirmed that Dumbledore would remain "the character Michael Gambon has already established".

Dan abt broadway and nudity....

http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1573561/20071105/story.jhtml

Radcliffe gave his final London performance in June, and ever since, there's been an online frenzy of fans wondering when the play would open Stateside. In August, Radcliffe told MTV News that the then-proposed production would include himself and Richard Griffiths, who plays Uncle Vernon in the "Harry Potter" movies and also co-starred with Radcliffe in the play's West End run in London, "and however many other castmembers the unions will allow."

"I'm excited," Radcliffe said. "Terrified, but excited."

Radcliffe received a Best Actor nomination from London's Evening Standard Drama Awards for his performance of the disturbed Alan Strang, a seemingly normal 17-year-old who is fascinated by horses but inexplicably blinds six of them with a hoof pick. The play, which starts with Griffith's psychiatrist character treating Strang, tries to understand why.

"The stage experience was phenomenal," Radcliffe said. "I think it came out at exactly the right time for me. At that stage, it was what I needed to do. And it was great fun. It was fantastic. I met some brilliant people and got to work with Richard Griffiths in a totally different capacity. Because as Uncle Vernon, it's great and we all have a laugh, but he's only normally around for a week, a week and a half. So to spend 16 weeks with him, and to do that character, that was fantastic. And sometimes it's hard to detach yourself from a certain character, after having done the show for 16 weeks. You do get very attached to him, and in a way, you do miss going out and doing it night after night."

But even with the familiarity of having performed the role — which included simulating sex acts — for a live audience in London, he still gets nervous, but not about the nudity. "Once you've been doing the play for two hours, you're so into the character, you're not even thinking about it."

most read books in UK are....poll...

No surprises here: A new poll released today shows that JK Rowling's Harry Potter series is the most re-read of all books in England. The books beat out JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and George Orwell's 1984, among others.

According to those who conducted the survey, respondents "returned to the same books because they are fantastic stories of which they never tire, they find something new in each reading, it is comforting, they can relate to the characters and it cheers them up."

injunction/restraining order placed on HP Lexicon..

A restraining order has been placed against publishers RDR preventing them from completing, publishing, or marketing the book until the court has decided if the publication of the book would break the law. The order will be held until February 2008.

As you may have read, on 8 November, 2007 a judge in New York granted an order against RDR Books in respect to the proposed book The Harry Potter Lexicon, such order applying to any proposed licensing of the book worldwide.

Judge Patterson has imposed a restraining order on the publishers of the Lexicon, which will remain in place until February 2008. This means that the book can not be completed, published or marketed until the court has had time to decide whether it would break the law if published in its present form.

I take no pleasure in the fact that publication has been prevented for the present. On the contrary, I feel massively disappointed that this matter had to come to court at all. Despite repeated requests, the publishers have refused to even countenance making any changes to the book to ensure that it does not infringe my rights.

Unless their position changes, we will all return to court next year. Given my past good relations with the Lexicon fansite, I can only feel sad and disillusioned that this is where we have ended up.

RDR books have updated their website with the following response:

"It is our wish that Ms. Rowling join Mr. Vander Ark in his campaign for literary freedom and free expression by dropping her complaint against a book we are confident she would enjoy reading."

and the Narcissa Malfroy actress is....

The Potter team have been after her for a while. She was originally cast as Bellatrix Lestrange in the fifth Potter movie, but couldn't play the part because she was expecting a baby. Now she's set to play Draco's mother and Bellatrix Lestrange's sister, who's played by Helena Bonham Carter.

Now the two will end up playing sisters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Other casting includes Jim Broadbent as Professor Horace Slughorn. An announcement on who will play young Tom Riddle and Lavender Brown is expected very soon.

Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince is due to hit cinemas towards the end of 2008.

ITN has posted another video clip of Dan and David Haig at the Imperial War Museum, very similar to the one we posted here before but with a few small differences. See it HERE. Many thanks to Radcakesfan for the link!

Also in the news today: Dan, Emma, Rupert and David Yates were asked about their thoughts following J.K. Rowling's announcement about Dumbledore's sexuality at the Order of the Phoenix DVD Junket, and you can see a video clip of their reactions by clicking either HERE (on ITN) or HERE (on YouTube). Many thanks to Lauren for those!

And speaking of Lauren, what could DanRadcliffe.com's super sleuth possibly come up with today to make you smile even more? Well... how about Harry Potter cakes with Dan's image on them? Yup! The proof is in the pudding

vote for JKR as Time Person of the Year..

J.K. Rowling is up for Time magazine's "Person of the Year".

Pro: Finished a seven-book epic that will be read by children (and lots of adults) for generations to come. Slowly creeping up on Agatha Christie as the most read author not named Shakespeare.

Con: Seventh book wasn’t her best, and hard to argue she was the most important person of 2007.

deleted scenes fr ootp dvd.spoilers..

A breakdown of each of the deleted scenes contained on the "Order of the Phoenix" DVD are as follows (spoilers!)

The second disc menu opens with a sweeping shot of the Black Family Tree Tapestry – stunning! Though I couldn’t see much it moves quite quickly. There were tantalizing glimpses including – the Black Family Crest – a coat of arms topped by a skull, with three ravens and an armoured hand holding a wands, and the motto Toujours Pur. Plus all those names – the Prewitts, Weasleys, Tonks’s, Regulus and Sirius, and someone called Orion Walburg (1925-195/8?). The shot ends with Lucius and then great embroidered face of Draco Malfoy. The branches also have little skulls, dragons, Griffons, and a Snake on the branch. Then the menu comes (still in tapestry form) and you choose from: additional scenes,Trailing Tonks, Hidden secrets of HP, HP: the magic of editing

Trelawney Eating
An extended shot of Trelawney eating her way through her dinner while Umbridge is making her speech in the backgrounds. Obviously, the cameraman couldn’t move on because Emma is so truly hysterically funny. Lots of fumbling and bumbling (I won’t spoil it for you by giving you all the details). A lovely touch is the ironic counterpoint of Umbridge’s phrases ( “utmost seriousness, practices which must be pruned, improve what can be improved, etc.) with Trelawney’s muddled messes. What’s nice is that you get to see lovely details of the table settings.

Neville in Common Room
Additional bit (only a few seconds long) after Harry’s confrontation with Seamus in the Gryffindor common room, where Neville talks about it being the Daily Prophet that’s rubbish.

Gryffindor Common Room
This is one continuous sweeping shot of the common room taking in all the other students before coming to rest on Harry sitting alone in front of the fire. I think it is after the detention with Umbridge and before Harry’s chat on the sofa at the fire with Ron and Hermione. There are some delightful touches, including a couple snogging on the stairs, Nevillle tending his Mimbulus Mimbletonia, some girls plaiting each other’s hair, Seamus and Dean playing cards, and glimpses of the tapestries on the walls. They should definitely have kept this scene! It’s just a complete contrast to the horror Harry has just endured with Umbridge, and it emphasizes how alone and apart from other students Harry is, how much more serious his worries are.

Umbridge questions Trelawney during a dream interpretation class
This is a lovely scene, with a sarcastic Umbridge interrupting and generally terrorizing Trelawney. There are also some great cuts to Ron (canon Ron - yay!) and Harry. Harry shows more grim, adult-like expressions as we see his dawning realization of how cruel Umbridge is, how she enjoys her power, how she is beginning to interfere at Hogwarts. They have cut this longish scene up into short cuts which they have spliced into the Umbridge Montage in the final cut of the film. Although the gist of the scene is kept, the mounting/dawning realization of what is happening (“The Minister’s eyes and ears”), is lost. Slytherins are grinning in the background, enjoying the cruelty. I think this sets up their later conversion to the Inquisitorial Squad. The scene also sets up Trelawney’s dismissal very nicely

Umbridge and Filch
Just a few seconds of Umbridge and Filch looking down from a high tower or balcony while some Slytherins (including Draco, Crabbe and Goyle) bully a young Ravenclaw student in the quad below. The scene shows her tolerance of evil as long as it supports her domination of the school, and her natural inclination to sadism, but not much is lost by omitting this from the movie.

Filch and Umbridge’s hair
Filch sniffing then blowing on Umbridge’s still smoking hair (after the fireworks)

Extended forest scene with Umbridge, Hermione and Harry
A longish scene in which Umbridge explains herself more, justifies her actions, and tries to elicit sympathy from Harry and Hermione. She winds up crying “Look what you’ve done to me, I cannot take it anymore!”

Harry in DD’s office
After the battle at the ministry, a rather battered Harry enters Dumbledore’s office. There are nice details of the office, the whirring and clicking instruments, the Gryffindor sword (I think – though it looks a little plain) on the desk, and cabinets full of mysterious objects in the background. But sadly (sigh) Harry does not go mad with grief and rage and smash things up. Harry spots the sorting hat again, then angrily turns to walk out but is called by back by DD.

Harry packing
Extended version of the scene in which Harry is packing to go home. Ron comes in and Harry tells him to go on to the feast without him (Harry). Ron returns to Hermione in the common room, and just shrugs in response to her enquiring glance. Nice canon Ron, good emphasis of Harry’s grief and aloneness, but to my taste, the poignancy of the scene is lost when Hermione half smiles in response to Ron’s shrug.

TRAILING TONKS
A high Energy Natalia Tena roams around Leavesdon Studios, using a marauder’s map type effect to show the viewer which department will be viewed next. We get to see her: in hair and make-up, the sound desk on one of the sound stages (not much to see there), the canteen, singing while playing a guitar in her trailer, cuddling the boarhound who plays Fang, Matt Lewis and Alfie Enoch (Dean) playing some cricket out on a nearby field, art departments – with a model of Kreecher’s head and one of the brooms, and brief views of some models of the set (e.g., atrium of the Ministry, Hogsmeade Village), graphics dept where we see Daily Prohpet newspapers, Sirius “Wanted” Poster, Marauders’ Map (yay!), special FX dept (wands, locking door from Gringotts movie I, prophecy ball, sound stage with fighting (wand dueling) training session, soundstage in the room of requirement, brief chat with Dan. Here everyone was wearing wierd blue surgeon-type shoes (so as not to muck up set floor?) Grimmauld Place kitchen and house (super-brief) Ministry atrium with set men scattering the floor with the shattered glass, model shop (centaurs, Mimulus Mimbletonia)

extra feature “Secrets of HP”
Narrated by the sexy-voiced Jason Isaacs (I knew you’d like that, Sue!), this is a long feature along main HP themes (e.g., Things are not what they seem; Choice; Pride and Prejudice; Battle for Harry; It includes: cuts and a few stills from all the movies so far, brief comments by all the major cast members (except Gambon ), David Heyman, and David Yates. Also no Alan Rickman (maybe he was still sitting on his Snapey secrets!) and theorizing by commentators including Jane Scott Batchler (author of “What will Harry Do?”), John Granger (author “Unlocking Harry Potter) and a fair few comments from Steve Vander Ark. No new movie material (I think). It gives the backstory of Harry, and his connection to Voldemort, his developing identity, etc. It’s a nice feature, though it could have been more in-depth for the true fan’s liking.

Extra feature: "Harry Potter and The magic of editing"
This is a shortish featurette on the difference that editing, visual effects, music and sound can make to a scene, with an interactive exercise at the end where you can choose the edits and accompanying sound and music for a scene (DA practice). I couldn't get this "game" feature to work, but this may be due to deficiencies in my DVD player, or my (non-existent) gaming ability.

Interview w. Emma/Hermione's body double.interesting.

EADT has a new interview with Charlotte Hunter, the woman who is Hermione Granger's body double in both Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince.

But then I got an audition to be Hermione's double. At first I thought: 'Loads of people are going for that. I will never get it. But I was persuaded to try for it even though I left the house saying: 'I don't even look like Hermoine Granger.' But to my amazement I landed the job. I happened to be the right size, shape, height, hair colour and they liked the way I worked and so I got that job and it meant that I had to say goodbye to the modelling. I was working without a safety net, so to speak, but I was finally at where I wanted to be - a full-time actor.”

...

She said that working on a big budget Hollywood movie was an eye-opening experience. "Because the rules governing children's working hours are so strict it means that whenever Daniel (Radcliffe), Emma (Watson) or Rupert (Grint) are on set they want to use them - so it's all close ups and shots where you can see their faces.

"When they are done it's back to the school work and my fellow doubles and I are used for long shots and cut aways. If you see Hermoine's legs running along somewhere or a pair of hands picking up a wand or a quill then they are probably mine."

Title this one Harry Potter and the Order of the Court.

Lawyers for Harry Potter screen star Emma Watson have gone after the Wayne-based Internet service provider 1&1 Internet, which hosts the site emma-watson-fans.net. In a motion filed in U.S. District Court here, Watson, 17, claims that the site has posted her personal e-mails, including notes related to the actress' breakup with a teenage boyfriend. Her attorneys sought a subpoena to learn the identity of the Web site's owner.

Anne Marie Tropiano of 1&1 yesterday said the ISP immediately contacted the site owner, who pulled the e-mails. She declined to identify the owner.

Emma's reaction over the backlash JKR got over Dumbledore being gay.

HERTFORDSHIRE, England -- Actress Emma Watson is astounded by the furor over revelations that Harry Potter's mentor Professor Dumbledore is a homosexual.

"I couldn't believe what I was reading," Watson tells Sun Media about the negative backlash toward author J.K. Rowling. "This is the 21st century! I just could not believe the amount of fuss that was being made over Dumbledore being gay."

Watson spoke up on the set of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Watson, who portrays Harry's friend Hermione, was pleased when Rowling first casually outed the Dumbledore character.

"I never actually thought about it before but, when she said it, I thought, 'Oh, yeah, that makes sense.' "

Now, however, 17-year-old Watson finds it "horrific" parents have proclaimed they will not let their children read the books or watch the movies.

interview w. Dan and Emma at dvd launch nov 3rd.

Of course Daniel Radcliffe (Dan) is already a big big star. Everyone calls him Dan, he introduces himself as Dan. This is the 2nd time in 5 months I’ve met him and he was much sturdier this time, still wiry as hell but healthier somehow – no discernible dark shadows under his eyes, loud and energetic as ever but not peaking from Red Bull overdose this time.

I always expect the “leads” to be big letdowns. To have less charisma than you would expect simply because their characters are literally larger than life. Dan Radcliffe doesn’t disappoint that way. He absolutely lives up the star moniker. Not in a conceited way, mind you, but with the self-assurance that indicates he’s accepted his fame and has learned to handle it responsibility, understanding that he above all others has a duty to promote his work and the project so closely attached to him, and in turn delivering on his obligation without a sense of resentment or the over-eagerness that would imply an inner famewhore. Rather Dan Radcliffe is impressively professional without being nauseatingly mature…unlike Dakota Fanning who is a 50 year old trapped in a 13 year old’s body.

Dan is a hardcore cricket fan. Told me about a match on Thursday, couldn’t wait to pile into his buddy’s car and drive all night to get there. I had to stop myself from asking if he was allowed. Because here’s the thing – many of you have shared your embarrassing secret, have developed a pervy crush, stemming perhaps from the bare-chested publicity photos of him from Equus, the stage production for which he stripped naked and for which he will do so again reportedly on Broadway next year. You were attracted to the taut, cut physique and the tantalising trail of fuzz beginning at his abs and leading somewhere naughty. You gasped at the prospect of a cute lad becoming a sexy man … and I’m going to stop you right there.

In person, he is very much still a child. He is small, he is my height. I am 5 ft 3 and ¾...on a good day. To me, that’s wee. More than that though, he still has the mannerisms of a boy. He holds himself as a boy, he speaks like a boy – rushed sentences when he’s enthusiastic, every other answer is a lame joke (when I asked him why he hasn’t turned out like Britney Spears, he told me it was because he refused the offer of breast implants - knee slapper!), big round eyes when describing even the most insignificant details …he is your best friend’s son or your BFF’s younger brother. I’m telling you – unless you are under 17, he is absolutely NOT for your quiver.

He is however delightful. He does his job without making you feel he’s doing his job. He has a firm handshake, he replies to every question (even though he’s already been asked a million times) with a response that is just as interested, just as engaging, just as present as it was the first time around. Joaquin Phoenix could stand to learn a lesson from Dan Radcliffe.

Above all, he is well mannered. So polite. Says please and thank you and what I will remember most: at one point, one of his handlers asked him if he needed a break. He said: “Yes, that would be great, if that’s alright with everyone?”

It’s obviously nothing extraordinary and even almost ludicrous that by simply reacting the way he “should” be reacting that he deserves applause. But you’d be amazed how few of them behave this way. Hope he doesn’t change.

I interviewed Dan in a room at 12 Grimmauld Place – the room in the movie where Sirius shows Harry his family tree, where certain sections of the tapestry have been burned out by Sirius’s crazy mother. I found Sirius’s name and Bellatrix’s close to it and then had to restrain from running my fingers across the scrawl. It is exactly as yellow and old and authentic as you want it to be. And just as wide too, which was the surprising part. Film sets are always smaller than they appear. Harry Potter productions however are almost always true to life.

Next it was off to Emma Watson who happened to be stationed in … Dumbledore’s Office! As it was the last time I met her, she was delightful. Rumoured to be rather prickly at times, on both occasions she’s been in fine form – super friendly, super chatty, very girly, and not Emmy Rossum. Nor in any danger of turning into one. Yet.

Last time she wanted to know about my nail polish, this time I went in right after my colleague Danielle McGimsie who was wearing a grey tunic over black tights and black suede boots. I was wearing a black and grey striped tunic, black tights, and grey boots. Emma commented that “Canadians are always so smartly dressed”. I will love her forever.

She herself had just had her hair blown out, in jeans and flats under a black cotton blouse, well accessorised as she was before. She told me she’s been super busy with the new movie and catching up with her “homework”. Hee.

I asked her how she was going to avoid turning in to Britney Spears. She told me she doesn’t hang out on the scene, said England, even with its sometimes pervasive paparazzi presence, can shelter young celebrities better than her American counterparts. I also asked her how it was on set in the 6th movie with all the hook ups and the making out. She laughed, seemed to be relieved that she had little to do with “all the kissing”.

As for Dumbledore’s Office – every bit as imposing and mysterious as you think it should be. And just as large as it looked in the movie, an ante chamber shaped like a globe leading into an inner sanctum, with portraits of the former headmasters hanging on the walls that you could have spent the entire day analysing, a little cluttered in some places, and curious objects dotting the shelves here and there begging you to touch them and consequently getting thrown out on your ass. Three steps led up to the inner chamber but unfortunately the entrance was blocked and I was too chicken shit to ask the lady guarding it to allow me in for a peek. Having said that, everything seemed to be preserved just as it was on film, except I looked and I looked for so long that I was nudged off the set, but still I couldn’t find the Sorting Hat.

auction details of Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Bloomberg lets us know that Sotheby's is hoping to auction J.K. Rowling's spin-off Harry Potter book, The Tales of Beetle the Bard, which we told you about a few days ago, for a sum of 50,000 pounds ($104,000) when it goes on sale on December 13th. This copy of the book is one of seven and is the only one that will be available to the public. The other six were given by JKR as gifts to those who have been the "real insiders" with the Harry Potter books. All money made on the auction of The Tales of Beetle the Bard will benefit The Children's Voice charity.

Sotheby's aims to set a record of 50,000 pounds ($104,000) for author J.K. Rowling when it sells a hand-written fairy tale for a children's charity on Dec. 13.

``The Tales of Beedle the Bard,'' containing five stories with themes from the Harry Potter books, is one of only seven copies handwritten and illustrated by bestselling author Rowling, Sotheby's said in a statement today. The London sale will benefit the Children's Voice, a charity co-founded by Rowling.

Billionaire Rowling, 42, has said she'll produce no more Potter books. Writing the fairy tale was a ``way to say goodbye to a world I have loved and lived for 17 years,'' Rowling said in the Sotheby's release.

The auction record for a book by Rowling was set last month when a first edition of ``Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'' sold for 19,700 pounds at a Christie's International London auction.

Sotheby's sold a postcard with a plot summary in Rowling's hand of ``Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'' for 28,680 pounds in 2002.

Dan is addressing the ongoing filming for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," and apparently the topic of Professor Dumbledore and the revelation of the character being gay has been met with great delight by actor Michael Gambon:

"Well, he's been camping it up around the set like nobody's business. There was a scene when Michael had to come in and tell someone how much he loved knitting patterns. He just adored saying that."

Dan will be Alan Strang again..

We are pleased to announce that it has been confirmed by Dan's Publicist that Dan will, in fact, appear on Broadway in EQUUS in September 2008. He will reprise his role as Alan Strang, opposite Richard Griffiths as Dr. Dysart.

Thea Sharrock will again direct the stage production and rehearsals will begin next August. According to the Daily Mail , it took months for negotiations to be finalized before a deal would be secured with the Shubert Organisation. Producers David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers sorted out the paperwork for the play's two leading men to perform in New York.

"We're delighted that New York is now going to witness Richard and Daniel's extraordinary performances," Mr Pugh said.

Dan was recently acknowledged by the London Evening Standard's drama award judging panel including him in its best actor nominees long list for his role as Alan Strang in EQUUS.

"How did you film the battle scenes?
We’d all be sitting there in the rain and mud, chatting to each other before a take and then we’d get up and dash through explosions, which were going off on all sides of us. There were markers dotted across this battlefield where the explosions were and then we’d start filming and they’d take them away and start the rain machines, so our vision would be reduced by about 70 per cent."

interview excerpt fr the one between TLC and Diane Nelson-President of Warner Bro

It’s incumbent upon WB to act to protect J.K. Rowling’s rights in order to retain the rights; failure to act may in some (or future) situations be seen as giving up of rights. WB feels it has worked with fans in many ways, by providing elements and materials to allow them to continue in a manner that isn’t commercial. It granted Steve Vander Ark and the Lexicon the rights to use some of its art non-commercially, back in 2001.

According to WB, J.K. Rowling doesn’t have a problem with people publishing or commercially gaining from commentary or analysis, but reconfiguration of her work doesn’t apply.

The British publisher of the Lexicon book is cooperating with WB’s requests and engaging in a dialogue, but it isn’t the case in the U.S.

WB doesn’t feel this is an issue of first amendment rights, and that there are unequivocally no rights owed to the Lexicon for a timeline deriving from the rights of others.

There is no intention to have this suit apply to other fan endeavors such as web sites, wizard rock, etc.

Dan is nominated for theatre award

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/theatre/article-23418933-details/Too+much+talent+on+London+stage+for+a+shortlist/article.do

A dazzling year of performances on the London stage will be honoured at the 2007 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Stars including Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Lindsay, John Simm, Jessica Lange, Billie Piper, Rosamund Pike and Kristin Scott Thomas are among the dozens who are under consideration for prizes.

With so many in the running, the judges made a plea that the longlist and not just the eventual shortlist should be released.

So today, for the first time, we list every person and production put forward by the judges - theatre critics Nicholas de Jongh of the Evening Standard, Georgina Brown of the Mail on Sunday, Susannah Clapp of The Observer, Benedict Nightingale of The Times and Charles Spencer of the Daily Telegraph.

De Jongh said: "The whole notion of introducing the longlist is to draw attention to the very high quality which we regularly enjoy across the full gamut of theatre.

"There has been this past six months a considerable range of fine acting and directing. Often as many as four or five people could be worthy winners in the closest-run categories, such as best actor and actress."

He said the full list would give a stronger appreciation of the work the judges got to enjoy, adding:"Everyone on the longlist deserves their moment of glory."

The shortlist will be announced next week and Richard Wilson, the actor and director, will compere the lunchtime prize ceremony at the Savoy on 27 November.

He takes over from Ned Sherrin, the much-loved broadcaster, writer and director, who died earlier this month, aged 76.

JKR site update..cool stuff..

JKR has updated her very cool site with a bit more stuff today! In the "News" section, we get to read her a few of her thoughts on Harry Potter fansites, the Harry Potter encyclopedia, and also why she won't approve of Harry Potter "companion books" or "encyclopedias" because they will benefit the author's financially, thereby undermining the monetary contribution to charity that she would like to make with all of the earnings from her own Harry Potter encyclopedia.

There are also two new fun things to discover on the site!
