excerpt-betsy's memoirs..

The sad, fat, ex-emperor was French. Miss Betsy B was English. Normally, the French ex-emperor hated the English, to the point of wanting to destroy them for good, but on this little island, he didn't have much choice. He was lonely. He had to make some compromise. Miss Betsy B didn't really care that he had once vowed to destroy her country and her countrymen. That he had wanted every English woman to give birth to a French man. To her, he was just a middle-aged gentleman with a round belly and a funny hat.

Miss Betsy B was the only member of her family who spoke French. The ex-emperor corrected her abundant grammatical mistakes, and she giggled. Her family giggled. The whole island giggled. What could be more amusing than an ex-emperor teaching grammar to a fourteen-year-old girl?
