HBP set report.
On January 29th of this year I was lucky enough to be invited down to Leavesden Studios in Watford, England, to see the sets for the sixth Harry Potter film, Half-Blood Prince, interview the cast & crew and watch a bit of the filming. Whilst there I interviewed Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Matthew Lewis, Bonnie Wright, Tom Felton, Jessie Cave (a newcomer to the series, who plays Lavender Brown), director David Yates and producer David Barron. Along with the other website representatives there that day, I was given a tour around the studios by one of the publicists.
I saw a huge array of sets including some which have been standing since shooting first began on the franchise way back in 2000. Highlights included sitting at Dumbledore’s chair in his office and sitting at the Slytherin table in the Great Hall, while watching the scene below being filmed;
This sequence involves the Gryffindor team chatting before a Quidditch match against the Slytherins. I won’t give too many details away but I will say that it involves Luna's Gryffindor lion hat which, as with past props, was created with the aid of Evanna Lynch herself. This was shot many, many times; during one take everyone had a good laugh at Dan Radcliffe's expense when he fell over trying to get off the bench at the Gryffindor table!
In terms of new sets, I saw the cave construction, which will feature in a climatic scene with Dumbledore and Harry, the inside of which I can only describe as being very crystal-like - a cross between Isla de Muerta in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and the cave in Superman Returns. With the CGI effects added, I can only imagine how expansive it will look, and how eerie it will be with its Inferi inhabitants.
I also learned that there will be scenes which indicate our favourite trio are getting older, including a flirtation between Harry and a waitress, which David Yates said was meant to show how Harry is maturing. Yates also said a kiss between Ron and Hermione was also going to be included … much to Rupert's surprise when I informed him … but that got scrapped in favour of what comes in Deathly Hallows. We also got to see some really cool concept art, including that of Fred & George’s joke shop, which looked to be bright and colourful, with a sort of nutcracker feel to it.

Hallows films for 54 weeks.

Teen Hollywood and Emma.
Hermione has grown up beautifully. Emma Watson started her role in the "Harry Potter" films at age ten and is now a gorgeous young woman of eighteen. While on a break from the "Harry" films, Emma chose to play her first voice role in the animated film The Tale of Despereaux based upon the popular book by Kate DiCamillo who also wrote "Because of Winn-Dixie".
Emma verbally enacts Princess Pea, a sad young woman trapped in her gloomy castle after her mom the queen dies and the king can't get over his grief.
Emma is now taking a "gap year" before finishing her studies at college and, last year, starred in a BBC drama called "Ballet Shoes" playing an orphan girl trying to follow her personal dreams. One of Emma's personal dreams is to one day sing and dance in a musical!
We sat down with the well-loved star at a fancy beachside hotel in Santa Monica, Ca. recently. Emma looked quite grown up, classy and beautiful in sleek black slacks and an ivory, one shoulder blouse with a drape neck. Her hair is still long and wavy (OMG, remember the first "Potter" film? Hermione's hair was like a giant furball that the cat tossed up! Those days are long behind Emma). Let's talk "Despereaux", princess and "Potter"....
TeenHollywood: Did you have to audition for Pea and if so, what was your audition process like?
Emma: The audition process was after I read the script. I was so desperate to play the role and so excited and enthusiastic about it that they very kindly gave me the role because I expressed so much interest in it. I loved it. I really loved it.
TeenHollywood: What did you like about your character in "Despereaux"?
Emma: She's basically your quite generic princess. She's very beautiful and she lives in the Land of Dor and everything's great, but then she loses her mother, and what makes it worse is that she also loses her father because he goes into this state of grieving, and he just kind of locks himself away from his people and his responsibilities and also from his role as a father.
TeenHollywood: That's sad.
Emma: Well, she's pretty lonely, she's pretty isolated, she's kind of literally locked up in this tower, and she can't really be part of the real world. So I thought it was interesting and felt very sad for her. I thought the conversations she had with Despereaux were really charming, and I really fell in love with the script and the book, more than the character.
TeenHollywood: This is a wonderful fairy tale. Both "Despereaux" and the Potter films are "otherworldly". Can you talk about the similarities?
Emma: The land of Dor feels quite magical so I guess it has that in common with Harry Potter. And also The Tale of Despereaux is (also) based on a book by Kate DiCamillo. Apart from that I think they're very different stories and have very different messages. Despereaux (a tiny, brave mouse with very big ears) has such a strong character and identity of its own.
TeenHollywood: Was this voice actor thing a fun departure for you?
Emma: It was so fun for me to work in a completely different medium, doing an animated feature, I'd never done that before, and it was a lot of fun and I'm massively proud of it.
TeenHollywood: You have verbal exchanges with the little mouse voiced by Matthew Broderick. Were you ever in the same recording studio working at the same time with him?
Emma: Yes. Matthew very kindly came in and did a couple of days with me.
TeenHollywood: Wasn't it quite new for you recording a voice alone in a booth?
Emma: Yeah, it did take me a little bit of time. But when you work on a film you do voice recording and if anything goes wrong, you do a couple days of ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). But a lot my performance is quite physical in the film because I've been kidnapped and there's a rat in my room and whatever. It was hard trying to get all of that into my voice; the emotion and the out of breath and the screaming. It was fun.
TeenHollywood: But, when Matthew wasn't there, wasn't it hard talking to just "nothing"?
Emma: I was actually given a toy Despereaux, about this big, who I could speak to, so I had kind of a substitute. So yeah, it was really interesting and great fun.
TeenHollywood: Can you tell us where you are in Harry Potter land right now?
Emma: Yes, we begin filming the seventh one in February, and the sixth one will be released in July of next year.
TeenHollywood: And the seventh is going to be in two parts, and you're going to work on it for a year?
Emma: Yes, but we're a long way off a film being released or a film being made, so to be honest I don't have a huge amount to talk about.
TeenHollywood: Okay then, back to Despereaux. Can you talk about what you think the message of the movie is?
Emma: There are so many good ones. I've watched a lot of animated films and I love animated films, so I feel like I can speak with a bit of knowledge. It felt really different to anything that I've ever seen before, because it felt like it wasn't patronizing to children. The messages that are in the film feel really profound and philosophical, and I loved the ending; a serious ending about forgiveness.
TeenHollywood: Everyone says they are sorry.
Emma: I thought that was incredible that there is this kind of chain reaction that happens where the king was hurt so he hurt his daughter, and Pea was hurting so she hurt the servant girl, and hurt Roscuro (a rat played by Dustin Hoffman) and the whole thing kind of just took off and just by one person saying 'sorry', and really meaning it, everything could kind of be restored, It was amazing. And my other favorite message was that 'every girl is a princess'. I thought that was such a beautiful message, that Mig (a servant girl in the castle), in her father's eyes, is a princess and I just thought that was beautiful. I really love it, it works on lots and lots of different levels. I don't think it's just a children's film, I think anyone can go and see it and get something from it.
TeenHollywood: Did you relate to the character of Pea in any way. You're English and you live in a castle of course...(we're kidding on the castle thing).
Emma: Of course. Everyone who's British lives in castles in the middle of the countryside. I never lost anyone close to me luckily so I can't relate directly to that experience and that's probably the biggest one for Pea but I guess everyone knows how it feels to feel lonely and isolated at times. I think it's part of being human and so I guess that.
TeenHollywood: Was it difficult coming back a lot to record the voice?
Emma: The Tale of Despereaux was made over quite a long period of time so I was kind of brought in for a couple days here and there and then they'd progress a bit further or something would change and then I'd come and do another 3 or 4 days. So it was quite spread out and was a long process so, in that sense, but it wasn't like a very intense work climate that made it difficult.
TeenHollywood: Was it difficult switching from "magic" school girl to Princess?
Emma: No, I don't think so. I guess I have paranoid moments where I will hear something in my own voice or I'll go 'Gosh, did I sound like Hermione then?' You know, I definitely have an awareness of it because I've played (Hermione) for so long and she is so distinctive and she is so much a part of me. So yes, I definitely have an awareness of it but Pea was more gentle. I instantly felt a different person or character playing her. I definitely had a sense that... It worked out okay. I was worried about it but it worked out okay, I think. [She laughs]Teen

Emma's 'voices.

Emma Watson has a lot on her mind right now. There's her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter series; her boyfriend, who is not either of her Potter co-stars, Daniel Radcliffe or Rupert Grint; and her new role as the face of Chanel perfume Coco Mademoiselle, replacing fellow English lass Keira Knightley.
On top of all that is her latest effort as the voice of the princess in The Tale of Despereaux, which is the animated movie version of the best-selling Kate DiCamillo book.
Opening on Friday, the film fantasy deals with a mouse (Matthew Broderick) who ignores his upbringing and tries to communicate with a princess (Watson) mourning the loss of her mother. That leads to consequences and some quirky action.
For Watson, the assignment was a little complicated. She did the voice recordings while filming last year's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, so she sometimes struggled to make sure her Hermione persona didn't surface in the princess's voice.
"I would get paranoid, especially about the voice specifics, where I'd hear something and think, ‘Gosh, do I sound like Hermione there?' " notes the 18-year-old. "After all, Hermione is distinctive and she is so much a part of me. But I think it worked out OK."
Certainly, there are differences between working on a cartoon such as the Despereaux fairy tale and the live-action fantasy Potter films.
"What they do have in common, though, is the magical feeling and the fact that both are based on books," she says. "But they have very different messages and different ways of getting their points of view across."
Her most difficult princess challenge, Watson says, was to elevate the personality beyond the "generic form we're all accustomed to."
That meant doing multiple takes, sometimes repeating even single words in an attempt to capture the essence of what the filmmakers wanted. She says the process was a valuable acting exercise.
"I had to make sure she sounded as she was [feeling], which happened to be lonely and isolated and not really a part of the world," Watson says. "Mostly I felt very sad for her, but I made sure she seemed to come alive when she had the conversations with Despereaux, which I believe turned out very charming."
Meanwhile, there are the continuing Potter film adventures. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is expected to open July 17 to a great deal of anticipation, while J.K. Rowling's last novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will reveal itself in separate films, the first part arriving in 2010, followed by the conclusion to the movie series in 2011.
The first part of Deathly Hallows is scheduled to start shooting early next year, but Watson deflects any conversation of what fans might anticipate. "Yes, we begin on the seventh one in February," she says of the Deathly Hallows two-parter. "And then the sixth one [Half-Blood Prince] will be released in July."
Other than that, she will only confirm that the Potter cast and crew will be filming both instalments of Deathly Hallows for at least 12 months.
So is the actress sad to see the Potter pictures coming to an end? She's grown up with the films since 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
"We're a long way off," Watson says, "so it's too early to talk about it or get nostalgic."

Emma in Closeup Mag UK.
There aren't many people, not even movie stars, who can say they will never have to work again at the age of 18. However, actress Emma Watson can say just that, and in fact did much to the jubilation of the tabloids earlier last year. The reason for the early wealth, and tabloid interest, is that Watson is the teenage star of the wildly successful "Harry Potter" franchise, having become famous all over the world for playing the studious witch-in-training Hermione Granger.
The films have grossed over (?)4 Billion worldwide and the 6th installment, 'Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince', is out next July. The film's young stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Watson, have all been thrust in the media spotlight, but prior to the shooting of the forthcoming film, all three principle actors' futures in the series were thrown into doubt, with rumours abounding that the pressure of having so much fame so young has got the young stars.
Watson has been in the film series since the beginning, filming the first movie at the tender age of 10. Whilst she enjoyed acting at school, the film was her very first foray into professional acting, having not come from an artistic background.
"I'd never done any professional acting when I started the Harry Potter films" she admits. "Both my parents are lawyers. This world was beyond anything I'd dreamt of." Despite this lack of acting pedigree, she has held her own against some of Hollywood's finest, even though she was unaware of it at the time. "I was out of my depth. I can still remember Dan's face when I told him I didn't know who Gary Oldman was" she laughs, "he looked at me like I had three heads or worse! I was extremely naive."
Watson has had lots of time to acquaint herself with the acting A-List, however, having shared screen time with the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham-Carter and the late Richard Harris.

Snippet of betsy/napoleon.
Young Elizabeth Balcombe, or Betsy to friends and family, found life on the remote island of St Helena intolerably dull. Most fourteen-year-olds would. Her father had been posted to that unforgiving station in the Atlantic and, being a family man, he took his family with him.
Life was bleak in Balcombe's bungalow on the fringe of James Town. But then, in October 1815, the situation was transformed by the arrival of an unusual visitor. Napoleon Bonaparte, one-time master of Europe, now prisoner and exile, stepped ashore. The Balcombes, like all the islanders, were amazed. And even more so when Napoleon, taking a fancy to their bungalow (the Briars) moved in with them. Betsy, overcoming her surprise at sharing her home with an emperor, delighted in his company and the two became firm friends.
Miss Betsy Balcombe made the most of her time with the world's most famous prisoner, keenly observing all around her, noting down conversations, recording moods. The result is a unique set of memoirs which records in astonishing detail an almost unbelievable story. That of how a precocious teenager and an emperor talked, argued, played, confided and teased their way through grim years of exile on the barren rock of St Helena
Emma is due to play betsy.

Emma-after Potter/
MTV: What kind of roles are you looking for after "Harry Potter" is done?
Watson: I want when people look back on my career for them to not be able to put me in a box and say, "She always played this kind of role." I want to do everything. I would love to be in a musical. I want to sing. I want to do a crazy Baz Luhrmann "Moulin Rouge!" sort of thing. I'd love to do a period piece. I'd love to do a French film. There are so many options out there!

EMMA WATSON: DESPEREAUX'S PRINCESS
While you'll have to wait till July to see Emma Watson as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, you can hear her this month in The Tale of Despereaux. She voices the character Princess Pea in the animated movie based on the bestselling children's book about how a fearless mouse helps change lives in the kingdom of Dor.
Emma jumped at the chance to play the lonely princess, her first cartoon voice, and recorded her part over a three-year period, a few days at a time. Until she got the hang of it, "I was a bit nervous," she admits. "But it was really fun, and I'm massively proud of it."
She especially loves the movie's message about forgiveness. "I think anyone can go see it and get something from it," says Emma, who related to at least one aspect of Pea. "Everyone knows how it feels to feel lonely and isolated at times. It's part of being human."
Emma calls the princess "more gentle" than the feisty Hermione, who's on the outs with her two pals in the sixth Potter flick. "She is pretty angry with Harry for a lot of it because he becomes addicted to this potions book, which she thinks is dangerous, and of course, she's right. And she and Ron have a big argument over this silly girl he's dating."
The final Potter book, The Deathly Hallows, will be split into two movies due out in 2010 and 2011. Filming starts in February on the first one.

Dan talks DH,epilogue.
E Online has released new video of an interview with actor Dan Radcliffe (Harry Potter), who makes new comments regarding the delay of the release of Half-Blood Prince and more. Of note are Dan's remarks on the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows films, where he states again he has not yet read the scripts, but after speaking to someone who has read them, he now has "high hopes" for the film and in particular the ending. On the matter of the epilogue, Dan does specifically discuss the possibility of the trio playing themselves aged by 19 years.
